Why Economics?
During high school, I enjoyed playing sports, reading comic books, and going to drama class. Academics, however, were another story, I worked hard but struggled in school. I was required to take an economics course that my classmates were convinced was a sinister attempt by NYC public schools to keep us from graduating. I met no one that even remotely liked the course or could really explain what it was about.
When I finally walked into class, I was hoping that there would be a fire drill every other day. So, imagine my surprise when I somehow manage to get through the chapter on supply and demand and found it interesting.
Economics had everything I could think of. It's was challenging, it had a practical real world application, and best of all I could draw graphs. I thought it was fun. A few years later, I actually decide to make economics my major in college.
When you search the internet these days, there are a plethora of websites that do a creditable job in relating economics concepts to students and educators. It seems that there are others who also believe that economics can be presented and taught in interesting and intriguing ways. There are video lessons, websites with lesson plans, and even a site dedicated to teaching economics by analyzing the economic scenarios presented in comic books. I am encouraged by all the use of technology in presenting the dismal science. And, I am hoping that this blog can be a source for educators looking for more innovative ways to teach economic concepts to their students.
