A brief introduction on what do Economist do?

What economist do? Is a video I created using Animoto an online tool for creating videos and presenations. It was relatively easy to use. I uploaded some PowerPoint slides and photos to Animoto. Then I created my infomercial using music from the site and incorporated some of their photos. Viola! My video is created easy peasy. Finally, I upload the video into u-tube and created a link to it in this blog.

The first few times I did it I ran to a number of hiccups. After a few attempts, I was able to set it up the way I liked it. I could see so many uses for this in the classroom. I could set it up, as an assignment where students would make a similar video describing what they think economics is. We can focus on a particular concept like supply and demand, or the possibilities frontier curve.

The best thing about Animoto is that it is free. If you are making a video that last less than 30 seconds. This is perfect. Students will need to have a clear understanding of the concept presented in class (i.e. the demand curve and shift in quantity demand) to present it in this format. Additionally, watching a 30 second video in a class of 20 to 30 students gives me enough time to view student's submissions in a relatively short amount of time.

Similarly, if I decide to have the students critique their classmate infomercials we can do it in one class period or spread it out over a series of days. We can even set it up as an in class event where we create categories such as funniest, most informative, or most creative infomercial. So there are limitless possibilities in connection with this tool.

The important thing to remember is that the instructor must have a clear idea on how they are going to fit this tool into their course. Content and standard should be your guide here. Otherwise, it just becomes a fun tool without substance.
